LA Mayor 2013: Greuel weakens all of our reputations

Kepp LA strong,do we want our neaxt leader of LA (or of local democrats) to be someone who can’t keep her campaign from going bankrupt so early? There are a lot of responsible democrats (like the clintons and obama) and angelenos (like the city council members and many business and labor leaders) who are not letting their respective organizations go bankrupt even in this tough economy of layoffs and furloughs. We need a leader who can lead LA into prosperity, not bankruptcy and worsening credit ratings for the city. We need a leader who will face a crisis with responsible spending and not panic spending. We can see the way they manage the money of a larger entity by the way they run their campaigs, and we know one candidate had a lot more to work with and burned through it to temporary close a ten point gap. We need a proven leader like Garcetti who has gathered the respect of city councilmembers and that includes Greuel who voted for him to lead the council she was a part of. That was Greuel’s vote for city councel leadership by the man her campaign called Prince Eric and this is my vote. I hope it is the reader’s vote too.

Ad ideas in last two weeks of LA mayoral race

Garcetti to discuss the cleaning up that needs to be done after greuel’s multi-million dollar dirty ads support from the DWP-led super PAC: he’ll be ready to cleanup unemployment, city liabilities, and restore growth by managing the city budget without going bankrupt. (If there is enough ad time: To do this, has sexured the endorsement of a large majority of the city council, and my biggest opponents prior to the final run-off will vouch for the respect they have for my candidacy.)

Could come before or after: Voiceover narrator to discuss greuel criticizing her fellow councilmember for a personal bankruptcy not related to a professional career and now her own campaign is bankrupt and needs to be bailed out by the DWP… AGAIN. Vote for competence, responsibility, and a brighter futue for you and your family.

Option: could mention that d some of the latino politicians who first didnt support obama or him when he helped obama Now support obama as we part of the same family supporting different candidates (villaraigoza cousin questioning his latino heritage comes to mind, which he later acknowledged… also pleite first attacked him and presented himseld as more in touch with poor hispanics now enorses him as unity will make strength he could join in) but we will come together in the end to support LA, and he is proud to maintain the support of most latino voters and new latino political endorsements so frequent now that we are coming together to make a voice for inclusion be heard with one voice. Couldmention opponent is out of money because she spent a lot of it attacking at his strong support from the latino and minority communities that support him in mailers and through lies and deception.
Nosotros seguimos siempre con Garcetti, por eso sera el siguiente latino democrata ser alcalde.

Or: Greuel spent millions of dollars attacking Garcetti like she attacked other candidates before the runoff, 10 points back she panicked and bankrupted her campaign with weeks to go. Now she wants another DWP bailout and hundreds if thousands of dollars are coming from the DWP led superpack to run more attack ads against Garcetti. Her record breaking funding for attack ads aims to minimize your votes and contributions for garcetti. She is even getting money from the DWP DC headquarters. Don’t let anyone buy our democracy. Your vote matters.

Spanish version option focus on super pac special interest versus grassroots voters from east LA to west LA and north LA to south LA, big money groups funding greuel’s many nasty aattack ads vs the people of LA and their independent thinking and analysis. If she runs through all their money on attack ads again, be prepared and come to vote On May 21st. Su voto es su voz.

Does the Farcetti campaign do enough outreach to asian american and indian communities, such as asian alnfuage tv or translators at phonebanks. Con trast: while greuel attacks public schools, garcetti encourages involvement in schools between parents and teaches and parents and their kids about reaching a high level of succes that their family can be proud of.

Garcetti mailer suggestion

Turnaround is still fair play, right?  Garcetti mailers could include a re-do of the anti garcetti with kevin james mailer and the jan perry mailer which were both targetted to minority communities. The front would have a major difference with Greuel juxtaposed for kevin james where the arrow point s to “Obama-hater.”The ad could provide info to minority voters about the support Greuel threw against Obama no doubt hoping to benefit from her history of good positions from the Clinton administration and the support Garcetti threw for Obama during the same Democratic primary when most of Greuel’s older generation black and hispanic politicians supporters sere also not backing Obama.  It can quote the Greuel mailer that said ‘”sold you out” …when it mattered most.’Yes Democrats we are all friends, but turnaround is fair play.In fact the mailer should highlight that Garcetti is highlighting his local suppirt in LA frim Jan Perry, Wesson, Pleitez, Bacerra, and other Angelenos or he may have made it and Obama people vs Clinton people campaign, but insteadhe chose Angelons vs San Francisco and out of Staters campaign. He chose all of LA to be represented by someone who can run a campaign or a city without running out of money or asking for a bailout.

Garcetti response options

Garcetti has the upperhand now that Greuel is spending all her money in an attempt to stop the downward spiral of her campaign.  It may have given her a temporary bump in the polls.

However, now the Garcetti ads can pace themselves, and a counter-attack at some of the attack ads may be necessary and understandable.

Either way, it is an interesting gamble by Greuel.  I think it is important to avoid chasing an opponent trying to set a new pace, but a good idea to respond.  That has been done with some standard commercials.  Now likely a few counter-attack ads may be necessary and justified.

If I had a chance to design an ad, which I have not as I am not directly working with either campaign, I would have had fun with it.

Perhaps a colored pencil drawing of workers who support Garcetti and trees planted in the city to highlight Garcetti’s green credentials, some supporters from business groups in Hollywood and of animation studios which Garcetti will be working to keep in Los Angeles as Mayor, to tie it all in.  Garcetti has solid support from business and private sector unions, studios and ethnic groups.  Not sure if this fits now with the way the campaign is being pushed by the Greuel campaign.

Oh well, one cannot let them dictate the entire campaign tone nor let the ads go unanswered.

Garcetti should discuss local LA pride, security policy

After the Boston tragedy, the suffering we’ve all been reading about has affected not only the conversation, but the safety concerns that we all think about even more for our families, our communities, and ourselves.

And yet we defy the real terrorists with every step of normal life.

Here I return to blogging about the campaigns with due considerations in mind.

Greuel had a campaign commercial about Sandy Hook incidences that was put out just before the Boston tragedy.  I am not sure if they will continue to play it as it was made, as it was made ahead of the tragedy.  It starts promising and ends on an odd little statement about needing a mayor that cares about the safety of ALL of L.A., and that represents ALL of L.A.  I’m not sure what contrast she may be referring.

Is that ad referring to Garcetti’s 20 point advantage with Latinos?  It couldn’t be because she has a 20 point advantage with the African-American vote.  Could it be about regionalism?  Some other oblique reference to division such as labor and business? My guess is it’s left unclear to both play against the Latino support enjoyed by Garcetti through divisive tactics and to leave an excuse to refer to her standard defense of her support from various interest groups.  Either way, a few ideas come to mind of possible responses the Garcetti campaign could possibly take this.

Example, city pride and security discussed in one:

Garcetti with various communities in LA,

voice over by Eric of having been “born in LA,

having grown up in LA,

being endorsed by angelinos, including the top competitors for Mayor of LA…”

I’m not sure if either candidate will reiterate previous expressions about the tragedy in Boston, but from Obama to Greuel and Garcetti it has borne repeating the discussion about how it unites all of us across party lines.   In the end Garcetti has a chance to describe his desire to make L.A. safer, such as through technology and training measures or whatever else may be recommended by experts.

I note that as public figures, Garcetti, Greuel, and even Villaraigosa have made appropriate expressions of support and solidarity with Boston which we all share.

There is a need to discuss if and how such themes would be discussed in any campaign ad most appropriately, given that there are valid campaign issues to discuss that relate to the situation and to the security of Los Angeles.  Keeping L.A. safe may be affected by putting the money of L.A. to work in the most effective way, not nescessarily through sloganeering about a certain number of new hires in the LAPD.  It may be better spent through additional surveillence and security techniques at major events, perhaps.

However, it may be decided that an LA pride and LA endorsements discussion that demonstrates leadership and sensitivity to the serious subject matter may be split or kept in a more limited ad. If the campaigns feel that it is right, it is a topic that I would want to hear about (tactfully and tastefully).

Garcetti vs Greuel LA Mayoral Debate Thursday April 11, 2013

Eric Garcetti and Wendy Greuel had a one hour debate today, 4/11/13, in the race to replace Villaraigosa as mayor of Los Angeles.

Who won the debate?

Undoubtedly, the debate was an advantage for Garcetti, though both performed well.  Garcetti’s lead has been widening in most polls that are conducted using the same methodology, the latest reported by ABC showed a 9 point lead, including a 5 point lead amongst women.

A debate in which both debaters perform well automatically plays to Garcetti’s advantage.

Furthermore Garcetti maintains his ability to deliver reasoned, measured, and consistent answers while deftly contrasting that with some of Greuel’s inconsistent positioning on such things as pension reforms and removing public employee raises.  Greuel would have needed to accomplish much more in this debate than she did and will ultimately face a steeper uphill battle with the time remaining before the final runoff vote.
